The smoking rubble of our home in the city of Ruval on Atavar. The place where my mother had died. Where Zephyr had been maimed.

“Help! Help us!”

My tiny voice was powerless to find the salvation I craved. Darkness was everywhere, stone and glass hard and cutting under my hands and torso. Burning pain was rocketing through my back and arm, constant and terrifying.

“Mommy! Mommy, where are you?”

I screamed in the dark, the smoke thick in my mouth as I did, trying to silence me as it drifted down my throat. Tears fell down my face, stinging the cuts there but I could not stop them. Was I alone? Were they dead? Was I going to die?

We were buried, I knew that much. The explosion had decimated our home and I’d been thrown away from my mother and sister. Where were they now? Had they escaped? Were they searching for me?

I reached around me, wondering if they were close and something viscous met my fingers. It smelled coppery, and wrong.

“Kier…Kier…”

My mother’s voice was so very weak and I crawled over more things that slashed the skin of my palms and legs, desperate to get to her. I knew what I’d find, even as I hoped that she’d be alright. I knew how this ended but I couldn’t convince the child version of myself to stop before I reached her body.

In the way of dreams, a light appeared from somewhere and I was no longer a child. I was myself as I was now, full grown but weeping. And the broken woman before me, was not my mother. It was Chloe.

Her blond hair was red with blood, her skin gray as her sightless eyes stared up at me.

“No…no! It’s all my fault…all my fault…I’m sorry…I’m sorry…I’m sorry.”

I screamed and screamed, my broken apologies became the cries of a dying creature whose heart was being torn from its flesh. I wept over her corpse, surrounded by the rubble of my home and knowing that this would be my tomb too. I could not leave her here, I did not want to live in a galaxy where she did not exist.

“Kier…”

The call came from a distance.

“Kier, stop!”

Chloe’s voice, but she was dead, I was holding her destroyed body…wasn’t I?

“Wake up, you’re dreaming. Kier, wake up, please!”

I was ripped from the nightmare and my eyes flew open in panic. I took a gasping breath and raised up my hands, grabbing hold of flesh. The room was dark, like the tomb that my childhood home had become, and I screamed.

“Lights! Lights!”

“Computer, lights up fifty percent,” Chloe said.

Light blinded me at first and I cringed against it. My fingers dug into soft skin and I heard a whimper. That began to snap me out of the fugue left over from the dream, and I slowly became aware of my surroundings.

I was holding onto Chloe, and my fingers were biting into her arms. I didn’t want to let her go so I simply loosened my grip and took in deep, shaking breaths.
